Step into the hidden universe that exists all around us but remains invisible to the naked eye. Dutch artist and microphotographer Wim van Egmond reveals the extraordinary world of microscopic life through his video work Portraying Micro Life, a mesmerising journey into the realm of plankton, bacteria and other tiny organisms.

Using advanced microscopy techniques and time-lapse photography, van Egmond transforms microbes into the main characters of his visual stories. These creatures, often no bigger than a pinhead, play crucial roles in our planet’s ecology. They form the foundation of food chains and cycle nutrients through ecosystems, maintaining the delicate balance that sustains all life on Earth.

The work challenges our human-centred view of the world, inviting us to appreciate life forms that existed billions of years before us and will likely outlast us. This microscopic vision represents a post-humanist approach, recognising that humans are just one part of a vast, interconnected web of life where the smallest organisms often have the greatest impact.

Looking through van Egmond’s lens, bacteria become dancing performers, diatoms transform into living jewels, and fungi reveal their secret networks.
