Kitty Kraus’s black box is also a closed system the inner workings of which cannot be seen. While the narrow gaps formed at the junctions of its sides do not allow us to look inside, the light shining through these slits projects a perspectival network into the surrounding space. Although this effect is created entirely by analogue means, it nonetheless appears inherently virtual.

The main protagonist of Kraus’s ambivalent work is not the black box hanging in the middle of the space but the light-and-shadow structure generated by the slits and gaps along its joints, filling the entire room. This immaterial system transforms the space and draws a new horizon before us that is capable of opening our vision towards other modes of perception through the fissures of closed systems with unknown functioning.
