ALAGYA (Áron LŐDI, Szilvia BOLLA): Light is a Theft, 2023
Site-specific installation
Laser-cut metal, UV-printed acrylic, laser-cut and thermoformed acrylic, LCD display, LED lights
The site-specific installation titled Light Is a Theft focuses on the origins of artificial light and its historical, and cultural agency. It creates an immersive experience where visitors encounter various real and fictive narratives about the relation between humans and light. Through the assemblage of different artworks, one can experience the story- making qualities of light in a dungeonesque composition.
Positioned in the middle of the space, the work Excavation of Liquid Crystals depicts a fictitious story about how humans extracted artificial light from the glow-worm, an insect with light-emitting organs. This monolith-like site is only approachable through a set of artworks activated by different sources of light. Those act as characters inhabiting this environment. Behind that, in the back of the room, another work titled Maps of The Untamed Threshold, presents the “final” form of light as it becomes a digital screen playing an animation that recites stories about its creation.
Alagya is the name of the artist duo of Szilvia Bolla and Áron Lődi. Together, they explore identity, hybrid materiality, and technology after capitalism. They aim to interpret the nature of artifacts with a post human approach through deep material investigations and a distinctive play between mediums.
