BORSOS LŐRINC: Trinity Model 2.1 (2022)
Site-specific laser installation
The site- and language-specific work of János Borsos addresses problems of identity philosophy. As in his 2009 work The Holy Trinity Model, which is a precursor to the installation on view here, the artist addresses the viewer through his distinctive, semiotically inspired visual language in a dramatic but contemplative way. Borsos uses laser beams, text, and space as a means to present a metaphysical revelation as both text and image. In this work, which points to conceptual issues of self-identity, two personal pronouns – the English “I am” and “you” – each become one another’s mirror image, interchangeable and substitutable through being drawn by the same laser beam on two displays of the same number of points of light, facing each other. Beyond being an ingenious visual pun, the installation is intended to be a paraphrase of an aesthetic concept by Alan Watts, a preacher of modern perpetualism: “The Universe is a multidimensional matrix projection of your soul and each person you meet is a different version of you awakening from the illusion of separation.”
The creative practice of János Borsos (1979, Székesfehérvár) is based on collective intelligence. With this in mind, and with the aim of experiencing everyday life as art, he created a formation called Lőrinc Borsos in 2008 with his mysterious alter-ego, Lilla Lőrinc. Borsos advocates the creation of installative situations that allow for an ironic and critical approach to the dangers of supernatural events and the socio-political messages of past historical experiences in the present. Her ritual actions unfold in hybridized spaces that evoke both Gothic horror and posthuman research laboratory sites.
