EMESE BENCZÚR: Flash of Hope 2018
Light installation: aluminium net, cables, ring pieces
Flash is a sudden and powerful burst of light that disappears as quickly as it appeared. It’s glowing in the moment. Hope is a constant wish for the fulfilment of our desires. An optimistic state of mind that gives us a chance to explore new and creative possibilities and helps to exceed our own abilities. Even if we experience it only for a short moment, it could uplift our soul. The belief that we can achieve goals and changes is motivating us instinctively.
In the Flash of Hope light installation, these two words – hope and flash – are taking physical shapes and becoming a message. The small elements of its technical structure start to speak and, beyond their materiality, they convey free associations. The meaning of its operational technique is closely related to the sparkling nature of the small bright pieces which form a text together. The mystical and seductive charm of light invites the visitors to create a metaphorical meaning of the built structure. The little parts of the mass-produced rings function not only as materials, but also as subjects of possible connotations, and call for subjective interpretations. The continuous flashes become semantic tools and generate an optimistic mantra. Their pulsation brings ordinary and spiritual qualities into synthesis, as the pink rays of the profane Chinese jewellery parts welcome us to a magical world. The creation process of the Flash of Hope was symbolic itself as well. It is important to mention that the artist collected materials for many years and wanted to give a new meaning for her stored devices by creating a unique artwork from them. It was originally created as a reflection on the difficult financial situation of the Studio of Young Artists Association. Thus, in terms of its social context, the glorious flashes expressed the importance of preserving the professional commitment and trust as a pledge of artistic life and existence.
Emese Benczúr creates art that features texts and short slogans which, through their extraordinary connection to the use of material and unique technique, reveal the complexity of her work. She regularly participates in group and individual exhibitions, and at art events both in Hungary and abroad. Her work has appeared at such high-profile international events as Manifesta, the Venice Biennale and the Liverpool Biennale. Her art can be seen in a number of big private and institutional collections.
