We need the mind of a scientist, the heart of a poet, and the eyes of a painter.

Interrupted continuity (2000)

Painted copper, UV light

The light installation draws a serpentine-shaped, continuous line structure in space, which reveals a new appearance to the viewer according to the current perspective. The artist painted sections of the curved brass wire mesh, intermittently, with fluorescent paint of various colours, making the spatial shapes created by the intricate web of lines seem incomplete and imaginary as if marking the threshold between the visible and invisible world. Mengyan’s visit to a police detention centre in Norway provided the starting point for the piece. The installation was first shown in Oslo in a space that had previously been a prison cell for prisoners incarcerated there. As a result, the artist’s site-specific work also reflects the changed living conditions of the prison inmates. The light, which seems both continuous and broken, symbolizes the dramatic change in their lives.

András Mengyán (1945, Békéscsaba) is concerned with the aesthetic principles of spatial dynamism created by colour and form. He constructs his paintings and site-specific installations on the basis of a specific combination of basic geometric elements arranged according to a particular logic. For him, research is an art that follows his analytical thinking and systematic creative approach.
