Light is not just a privileged substance: it is an essential element. Without light there is no visual effect, no communication.

Modulator V3 (Paraphrase of LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY-NAGY’s Light Prop for an Electric Stage) (2022)

Kinetic sculpture

Dávid Szauder, a leading Bauhaus professor, drew inspiration from the iconic work of 1930 by the Constructivist painter, photographer, designer, and theorist László Moholy-Nagy, entitled Light Prop for an Electric Stage, when he created a paraphrase of one of the pioneering works of light art. The construction, conceived by László Moholy-Nagy and designed by the architect István Sebők, was originally intended as an “experimental device for light painting”, with the potential to use information gathered from various fields of art to operate it. One idea was to create multiples for a multimedia installation, using the coordinated operation of the device, which could be triggered by remote control. Drawing on the prototype artwork (the original of which is in the collection of the Harvard Museum and two other replicas in Eindhoven and Berlin), Szauder creates an interactive performance, which taking into account Moholy-Nagy’s aesthetic-pedagogical programme, is enriched by an auditory experience that responds to the light and shadow environment created by the movement of the sculpture.

Dávid Szauder (1976, Budapest), media artist, graduated in Intermedia after studying art history and completed his Master’s degree as a scholarship holder at Aalto University in Helsinki. Since 2009 he has been living in Berlin, where he has been curating workshops on interactive media. His work blends computer imaging, generative media, data art, glitch art, and virtual reality, as well as the conceptual use of animated film.
