Iris (2021)

Light installation (laser, metal sphere, computer control unit and loudspeaker)

One of the deities who lived on Mount Olympus was called Iris. When Iris brought messages from heaven to earth, she made the significance of her mission clear by paving her way with rainbows. The installation by the Eozin group has cosmic associations with the origins of the mythological figure whose task was to link the worlds of gods and mortals: the spherical mirror, illuminated by laser beams, evokes both the industrial aesthetics of space probes and satellites and the expanding and contracting pulsations of the pulsars that make up the universe. Iris’s other vision-related tool is the human eye, a tiny circular organ responsible for regulating the size of the pupil and coordinating the amount of light reaching the retina. This is the symbolic equivalent of the special light effect produced by the aberration of chromatic dispersion, which is the result of the special surface finish of the spherical mirror covering the superficies of the ball moving up and down in the artificial atmosphere generated by the fog machine in a pattern resembling a rainbow membrane. Iris is one of the few installations with a definite beginning and end. It articulates a continuous narrative of precise movement and spatial calculation. The work is rounded off by Jérôme Li-Thiao-Té’s futuristic rave music, which evokes the rumbling of the wind with primitive beats.

Iris is the first joint work of two engineers, Zalán Adorján (1991, Kecskemét), Róbert Terkál (1989, Târgu Mureș), and András Nagy (1994, Budapest), a mapping artist. The collaboration exemplifies an emerging generation of teamwork engineers who are exploring the aesthetics of human-machine interaction, exploiting the new possibilities of computing and robotics to create real and virtual environments.
