We need the mind of a scientist, the heart of a poet, and the eyes of a painter.

Limbo (2020)

Plexiglass, hologram animation

This interactive sculptural object explores the relationship between nature and technology, machine and organism, order and freedom. Limbo uses recursivity and contingency as two basic philosophical concepts of human existence. The installation reveals the constantly recurring life cycle of a digitally generated entity. In the virtual space of the program, four cameras record the simulation, which is ultimately displayed as a three-dimensional holographic image in a Plexiglas pyramid, or frustum. The holographic animation depicts a bust, which is the actual prototype of the life path of the entity presented, from the zygote state to death. The last state refers to purgatory, the theologically possible “limbo” on the edge of hell, which ensures that the entity is forced into a never-ending, repetitive cycle. The iconoclastic noise composition that accompanies the installation interacts with the gestures of the viewer encountering the work, breaking and somewhat modifying the monotony of cyclical permanence.

Gábor Kitzinger (1977, Budapest) has established his reputation through the synthesis of art, audiovisual culture, and technology. His work in the 3D animation and video mapping scene began in the early 2000s with VJ performances at large-scale underground technoculture events. Joining the pioneering light art group, the Burning Incandescents, he designed several large-scale building projections and delivered numerous AV performances around the world. His most recent sculptural works consist of interactive pseudo-holographic constructions. His research focuses on autonomous narratives using data and artificial neural networks.
