Light possesses a paradoxical, dual nature. But is not this dual nature also the bearer of the human essence? When we study light, are we not again studying ourselves?

Hexa (2017)

Interactive light installation

The installation, consisting of a network of hexagonal slit-shaped LED spheres grouped in curtain-like structures, is made up of two thousand individually controllable light sources. The key to creating this unique lighting environment is the artist’s collective proprietary software, a real-time 3D light controller called a Lightformer. The tool is used to create a modular, programmable light sculpture from micro-molecules or corpuscular plastic units that evoke the basic elements of the characteristic colour-forms of abstract geometric art. However, the work does not capture a closed, final state, but leaves open the possibility of completion for the viewer. Thanks to the interactive system, everyone can modify the parameters of the installation according to their own taste: a sensor maps the spatial position and orientation of the hands, allowing a somatic experience of the dynamic light field. Hexa provides an example of visual communication based on a wealth of optical stimuli and infinite variability, which can be used to validate the consequences of the permutation of form and colour in the design of public spaces to meet social needs.

Since its foundation in 2012, the Healium collective, led by Márton Timóczki-Nagy (1988, Budapest) and Zsolt Emri (1982, Miskolc), both graduates of the Media Design Department of the Metropolitan University of Budapest, has been exploring the organic relationship between the triad of light, space, and community. The group first attracted international attention in 2017 with their installation Training 2038, which explores mixed reality based on the dialogue between humans and artificial intelligence, presented at the Ars Electronica festival in Linz.
