Re-Fracture 4.0 is the fourth iteration of Fracture, the space installation by Glowing Bulbs, originally created in 2018 for the Hungarian Academy in Rome. In the first version of the work, the simple recursive elements created a striking contrast with the Baroque garden of the Palazzo Falconieri, organized from a collage of decorative details. The effect of Re-Fracture 4.0 is quite different in one of the darkest rooms of the Hold Street Market Hall. An eerie sensation captivates visitors as they enter a dim agora delimited by sixty columns of powerful stroboscopic lights. The installation is the product of an intervention that explores the cyclical nature and symmetry of time. It creates a simulacrum of natural phenomena of majesty and wonder, evoking the irrationality of making the invisible visible, a late parallel to Walter de Maria’s conceptual environmental work The Lightning Field. However, in the Burning Embers installation the inexorable flickering of time creates a provocative, immersive – even ecstatic – effect, while the viewer is forced into a passive role; it is in fact the act of seeing that becomes performative.
Founded in 1999, the Glowing Bulbs art collective has an established history of almost 25 years. Their ephemeral site-specific installations and projected light environments have been viewed by audiences around the world. The current members, Tamás Zádor, Márton Noll, Krisztina Heckler, Fülöp Farkas, Gábor Kitzinger, and Balázs Nagy Sarkadi, have a synergistic and creative blend of aesthetic and engineering tasks as the cornerstone of their collaboration.
